ENGAGED // JULIE + TOM

… It started with a candle.

Actually, it started with a really sweet girl named Julie having impeccable manners. No, really. She first grabbed Tom’s attention by her graciousness to hold open the door for him of their shared apartment complex, alongside her random “hellos” and sweet smiles that seemed to come so naturally. He knew he had to have her, but he also knew he’d have to be patience.  As it turns out, this gem was already taken.

With the holidays in motion, Tom searched high and low for the perfect candle.  This was the first impression. The first gift he’d be giving the girl with the impeccable manners. It couldn’t be just any candle.  He wrapped it with a note, ever so swiftly including his phone number (along with a side of high-hopes to hear her voice on the other end of the line… soon). Strategically leaving it outside her door. No doubt peaking every few minutes to see if she had collected…

So, yes, you could say that it started with a candle ;)

After 5 years of growing together and growing in love, Tom didn’t want to wait another minute to ask Julie to be his forever.  So much so, that he …. well, hang on.. I’m getting a head of myself ;)  Julie had been downtown for the day, and since Tom so conveniently happened to pick up something shiny (and might I add, ah-mazing. Her ring is gorg) he called to ask if she would want a lift home.  Confused, and a bit thrown off as to why he was in the city, Julie was in no way going to turn down the offer.  With the ring in the backseat of the car, and the woman that he loved to his right, Tom had a plan.  But as it generally happens, when we plan, our alter-egos laugh.

He couldn’t wait. The moment they entered their apartment and she settled out of her coat and wandered into the kitchen, without reservation, Tom got down on one knee. This was the woman who knew him better than he knew himself. With whom he shared everything. The woman who within seconds, would become his partner, for life.

This chapter, we’ll say:

….It started with a “yes”

ENGAGED // GREG + CAROLYN

You know those couples you see walking down the street, and immediately you do a double take because you’re convinced they cannot be real? Two genetic make-ups that attractive, both happened to find one another, and now they roam the streets turnin’ heads and breakin’ necks. That, my friends, is Greg and Carolyn. Plus they have the most genuine personalities to boot.
When I met them back in July to talk about possibly shooting their June 2012 wedding, I was first in awe with Carolyn’s flawless sense of style, and then, Greg’s quick appreciation for my vigorous organization skills :)  Within moments of talking to them, I had my fingers (mentally) crossed that they would ask me to document their big day. My hopes only intensified as they began to unravel their story about how meeting at a bar can, in fact, turn into love.
After taking a vacation to California, a place they both used to live, and a place they both still love,  Greg knew that there was no better place to ask Carolyn to be his wife than their favorite spot in Laguna Beach called, “Thousand Steps” – symbolic, don’t you think? ;)  Alone on the beach, sitting side by side; taking in the waves and the fresh Southern California air, Carolyn feels the breath of her man in her ear – whispering how his love for her is unlike any other, knowing full well that she is who he wants by his side, taking in all of life’s surprises, every day, for the rest of his life.  The moment was happening, and as Carolyn describes, it was priceless.
The day of our shoot started out with rain and winds, but gently calmed its self down and came through with incredible light.  I couldn’t have asked for better weather, a better location, or better subjects.  Lots of smilin’ and lots of smoochin’ ;)  This couple is sure to make you swoon.

Meet, Greg and Carolyn..

Greg and Carolyn… cannot wait to see you both in June ;) xoxo

MARRIED // KRISTEN + STEPHEN

I know this is a bit out of the ordinary – my blogging your wedding in “letter” form, but it seemed appropriate considering the things that I have to say about this event, are directed towards the two of you. The amount of work and energy that you put into this day still leaves me in awe.  To say that this was a labor of love, is the understatement of the century.
Kristen, from the moment you entered the bridal room, the glow you were wearing was undeniable. Happiness became you, and you made it impossible to forget, even for a moment, what this day was all about; the day you would be marrying your best friend.  The natural grace and beauty that you have is astounding. Anyone can see it through these images, but your personality and warmth towards everyone around you, is the true reality as to how beautiful you really are.
Stephen, I’m sure you can attest to all that’s written above about your wife ;)  but there is much to be said about you, too. Your personality is through the roof – I have never had a client make me laugh so hard, simply by being themselves.  The expressions you choose to make in your photographs are one of the very reasons this wedding will remain one of my all time favorites; alongside the other 9, 590, 930 reasons. I feel confident that I speak for everyone who knows you when I say that the love you have for Kristen and your family and friends is unique and to the brim.  It shows.
I can’t thank either of you enough for welcoming me into your little (big) world of love and laughter.  This event was unlike anything I have ever witnessed. The energy filled the room with ease, and it was clear that everyone was there in celebration of a love that was meant to result in ever after.  Having the opportunity to freeze those moments of bliss for you both, and to have had the chance to meet your friends and family (who, might I add, have the most incredible dance moves I’ve ever seen..) was so humbling.  I hope you love your images as much as I loved taking them.
All the best to you both on your new journey as Californian’s ;) xoxo
The ladies put these together…. all. by. themselves.

There’s gorgeous. And then there’s Kristen.. so lovely.
I lost it here. Shed a few tears behind the lens… I mean, look at his face :)

Mr. + Mrs. Shumaker… xoxo

Just when you thought they couldn’t get any cooler…. this happened ;)
Every single thing you see here, was hand crafted and set up by K, S + their entire bridal party.  The coloring and the warmth of this room still gives me chills.

These facial expressions killed me. Hilarious :)

If it were acceptable to rent Maid of Honor’s, I’d choose Meghan.

The night carried on with hands down, the best music I’ve ever heard – alongside a heavy dose of good dancing. Never a dull moment, and it ended all too soon.  Congratulations K + S! xoxo

ENGAGED // KRISTEN + STEPHEN

Being a wedding photographer and meeting with lovely people on a regular basis, you’d think that the phrase, “we just knew” would be relatively common. On the contrary.  It’s actually something I’ve only heard once; from Kristen and Stephen.  Tucked away in a booth at local coffee shop awaiting our consultation,  I recognized a kind of comfort that grows within a love that’s familiar. Comfortable. Secure.

There was no grand anticipation as that ring made its way to her finger.  There was no shock.  There was no disbelief or sudden heart palpitation.  He knew she was the one, and she knew that he was hers forever

…and that together, they were timeless.

This is the word that comes to mind when I think of Kristen and Stephen.  It embodies them as a couple, and as individuals.  Their natural grace in front of the camera is identical to the effortless motion that they display behind the camera. They radiate a sense of calmness for a life that breathes chaos within a tight timeline. With a wedding on Sunday and a move to San Diego on the following Tuesday, to say these two are about to embark on a journey filled with wonder and timeless memories, is the understatement of the century; much like their love story, which I have the honor of documeting this weekend…

Meet, Kristen and Stephen..
